Hands-on with the HTC Butterfly

The HTC Butterfly, the global version of the Droid DNA from Verizon, was announced last December and this week, I finally got the chance to get a hands-on time with it. If you don’t remember, this is their first smartphone to have a full HD 1080p display.

Being a 5-inch smartphone, the HTC Butterfly is slightly taller than other Android flagships like the Nexus 4, Samsung GALAXY S III, and the LG Optimus G, though not as wide as the GALAXY Note II. Even though it is a 5-inch smartphone, it doesn’t feel that big when you hold it.

While the Droid DNA for Verizon has the soft-touch matte texture on it’s back, HTC decided to use plastic on the Butterfly with a glossy finish, which makes it slightly more attractive especially the red variant.

The Butterfly’s back side is tapered on the left and right, which makes it look thinner when viewed from the edge. HTC decided to hide the microUSB port, SIM card tray, and microSD slot with flaps. Opening them is a little hard, so if you’ve got short fingernails, it could be tricky for you.

When it comes to display, I’ve got to say it is the most beautiful smartphone display I’ve ever seen. The blacks are deep, and the colors are saturated enough to give it the right contrast. With a pixel density of 441ppi, you won’t really see the individual pixels with your naked eye at all. That means the texts and images on the screen appear really sharp. I’ve got to hand it to HTC for delivering a good, awesome display on the Butterfly.

This is just my short hands-on with the HTC Butterfly. I’ve been using this for a few days now and will give my full verdict in the review coming up next week!

The HTC Butterfly is already available in the Philippines since January, and it has a suggested retail price of P32,990. As always, you could get it for less if you’ll pay by cash.
