Nokia Steps Up Drive to Educate Underprivileged Filipino Kids Through London Philippine Fashion Show Sponsorship

Taking to heart its commitment to help provide educational support for underprivileged Filipino children, Nokia Philippines recently lent support as a major sponsor to the first-ever London Philippine Fashion Show held at the Victoria House Basement in Holborn, London.

The fashion show, presented by Prospero World, a UK-based international philanthropy consultancy organization, brought together 15 of the Philippines’ most celebrated fashion designers and local brands to showcase the latest in local fashion design.

Photo shows Ayala Corporation’s Fernando Ayala de Zobel (far right) with esteemed guests (from left), BBC ‘Antiques Roadshow’ presenter Philip Mould; Prospero World’s Bridget Franklin and Sita Schutt; Mia Borromeo; Prospero World’s Sandra Lauckner-Rothschild; Veera Johnson of UK-based bank, Templewood; and Prospero World’s Anna-Louisa Psarras.

Participating in the historic fashion show were renowned Filipino designers Josie Natori, Michael Cinco, Pepito Albert, Randy Ortiz, Rajo Laurel, Lulu Tan Gan, Cary Santiago, Jun Escario, Mich Dulce, Wynn Wynn Ong, Jasper Garvida, Lesley Mobo, Federico de Vera, and Joyce Makitalo, and joined by top local fashion brands Celestina, Bergamo, and Silk Cocoon.

Nokia Philippines supported the event for the benefit of The Ayala Foundation’s Centre of Excellence in State Supported Elementary Education (CENTEX) project, a program which aims to support the education of talented but disadvantaged Filipino children in the Metro Manila area.

“Nokia has always prioritized education as a main thrust of its corporate social responsibility. Here in the Philippines, there is a lot to be done to help underprivileged kids. The company believes that every Filipino child deserves a fair chance at education so that they can build a bright future for themselves,” said Dharmesh Goshalia, general manager and head of sales of Nokia Philippines.

The successful event raised £160,000 from tickets and donations, as well as auctions of antiques, fashion items, and Asian travel packages. Part of the funds were raised by a group of 12 ‘sponsored models’ who are actually business professionals, sharing the catwalk with the real models. One of the ‘sponsored models’ was Alice Motte-Munoz, who is half-Filipina, half-French. The raised funds will be able to support the education of 500 children under the CENTEX education program.

Launched in 1998, the CENTEX program aims to provide high-quality education to bright students from the poorest backgrounds in the Philippines. The program gives selected kids an outstanding education from age 5 to 12 years. To date, the project helps 1,000 children a year, at a cost of $500 per child/school year. It currently works with two state schools in Manila and Batangas, and has consistently topped rankings for the National Achievement Tests in the country. CENTEX also actively supports its alumni by helping them secure scholarships in top high schools, colleges and universities.

The CENTEX program is just one of the efforts being supported by Nokia Philippines that aims to provide educational support to Filipino kids. Among its ongoing efforts is the Text2Teach program, a project it conceptualized in 2004 together with other partners and Ayala Foundation. Text2Teach uses mobile phones as a tool to make learning more fun and effective for grades 5 and 6 students. To date, almost 57,000 students in public elementary schools are learning using mobile technology. Phase 4 of the program is ongoing with an objective to develop new curriculum-based content, reach far-flung areas, enhance teacher training, and upgrade existing programs.

SMART To Bring HTC One X, Sony Xperia S, and Nokia Lumia 900 This Summer

Smart Communications Senior Marketing Manager, Louie Ang, said in a tweet that the company is set to offer the three 'heavyweights' of 2012 - the quad-core HTC One X, the 12 Megapixels Sony Xperia S, and the Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone in the Philippines.

I think Smart will bundle those phones with their affordable data plans, just like what they do with other smartphones. My guess is that the HTC One X and Sony Xperia S will be free at Data Plan 3000, while the Nokia Lumia 900 will be free at Data Plan 2000.

Let's just wait and see...

UPDATE: Confirmed! Microsoft and Nokia Doing the Smoked By Windows Phone Challenge in the Philippines Right Now?

"What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas."

That's what the guys at Windows Phone Blog said regarding their infamous (or now famous?) Smoked By Windows Phone challenges that started at CES.

It seems that Microsoft and Nokia has teamed up to bring the said challenge here in the Philippines thru the "Smoked by Nokia Lumia" name, similar on what they did on India. A number of posts on Nokia Philippines' Facebook page from a few persons has started to appear just 8 hours ago.

Phones that just got smoked include the Apple iPhone 4, the Samsung Galaxy S II, Samsung Omnia Pro - which runs on Windows Mobile, and a BlackBerry Torch. It also looks like that the Nokia Lumia (I'm not sure what device did they used here) lost against a Sony Xperia phone.

What we don't know at the moment is what are they offering for this challenge, when and where are they doing it.

We're reaching out to Nokia and Microsoft now for a confirmation. And hopefully, we're expecting to get some videos and/or photos for you to see.

UPDATE: Nikka Abes from Nokia has confirmed to me that they are indeed holding the Smoked by Windows Phone challenge at the Microsoft Innovation Universe @ SM Megamall Megatrade Hall 3. It started last March 21 and will be until March 23. So what are you waiting for? Visit the Microsoft and Nokia booth now and see if your phone is faster than Windows Phone! For more info about Microsoft Innovation Universe, click here.

Smart Unveils Budget Limited Edition Data Plan 1000

Smart recently unveiled last March 9 their new upcoming Limited Edition Data Plan 1000, a postpaid service which comes with an abundance of free minutes, SMS, and lastly, mobile data.

“This is an offer which combines a best-value plan with the best smartphone deal,” said Gio Bacareza, head of Broadband Internet and Data Services at Smart.

“This is a key component of our goal to enable all Smart subscribers to have access to the Internet through their phones -- because every Filipino, for that matter, should have access to the Internet.”

The LE Data Plan 1000 comes with 500 SMS to all networks, 500 minutes of calls to Smart phone numbers, and lastly - being a data plan - it comes with 1GB worth of mobile data, all of that for an MSF of only P1,000 for 24 months.

That doesn't end there. Smart is throwing in a number of high-end smartphones that you may only avail if you sign-up for a new contract. Among the list is the Samsung Galaxy Note, Nokia N9, HTC Sensation XE, among others. You can get one of those high-end phones or tablets for a low amortization fee. Check out the full list below.

Monthly Fee for 24 months
Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray ₱500
Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 ₱800
BlackBerry Curve 9360 ₱800
Samsung Galaxy Note ₱900
Samsung Galaxy Nexus ₱900
HTC Sensation XE ₱900
HTC Evo 3D ₱900
Nokia N9 ₱900
BlackBerry Bold 9790 ₱900
BlackBerry Bold 9900 ₱1,300

Anyway, I find the monthly fee for the BlackBerry Bold 9900 a bit high. For a comparison, you can already get a 16GB iPhone 4S for only P999 per month, on Plan 999. So that settles at P1,998 monthly fee.

You may sign-up for the Smart Limited Edition Data Plan 1000 starting on March 15. And this being a limited edition plan, it will only be available until May 15, 2012.

Smart Intros Tri-Net Combo Prepaid Plans

Smart Communications is continuing to offer more and more prepaid plans (or promos) that allows you to connect with anyone on Smart, Talk 'N Text, and Sun Cellular. Still thanks to the recent merger of PLDT and Digitel. The newest member of those offers is the Tri-Net.

Available in 1 day and 7 day variants, the Smart Tri-Net plans will give you 100 all-net sms + 50 tri-net mins + 5MB for only P30 and/or 500 all-net sms + 120 tri-net mins + 70MB for P100 respectively. The only thing that's still bothering me, and possibly lots of Smart subscribers too is their prefix system that is required to make calls. For example, to make a call to Smart/Talk 'N Text/Sun Cellular if you are subscribred to Tri-Net, you have to dial 5 more characters plus the 11 digit phone number.

Anyway, back the the details. You can avail Tri-Net in either 1 day or 7 day subscriptions. Just text TRINET30 or TRINET100 and send it to 2477. You can use the 'all-net' SMS to send texts to all networks in the Philippines (Smart, Talk 'N Text, Sun Cellular, Globe, and TM), while for the 'tri-net' minutes is only for Smart, Talk 'N Text, and Sun Cellular, hence, the Tri-Net name.

Oh and before I forgot, the Tri-Net plans also includes 5MB and 70MB of mobile data for the 1 day and 7 day variants respectively. Of course, this is meant to be used on mobile phones only.

Unless Smart extends or makes this a permanent offer, the Tri-Net will only be available until April 2, 2012.
