Facebook for Windows Phone gets major redesign, now more functional and intuitive

Facebook 5.0 for Windows Phone

Long-time Windows Phone users know how unpleasant using the current version (4.2.1) of the Facebook app. It’s clunky, confusing, slow, and just has too much wasted screen space. Luckily, Microsoft and Facebook has not forgotten to make the app better.

Today, Microsoft announced the newly updated app coming soon which includes a new design now in line with the iOS and Android aps as well as several much-requested features like Timeline support, post sharing, high-resolution photos, and the sliding menus for easy navigation.

As for me, I like the new layout and design of the Facebook app. Going in and around it is now a more pleasing experience which actually makes me want to use Facebook on Windows Phone. Previously, I have always resorted to using the mobile web version and not the app. Kudos Microsoft for the job well done!

That being said, the app still bears the beta label and is set to undergo improvements as feedbacks are sent to Microsoft. So if you’re the type of person who like to use pre-release software and help improve the app, head on to this link and get it.

Twitter addz LOLcat as supportd language, kthxbai

Twitter LOLcat Language

Twitter, in a totally unexpected move, decided to add LOLcat as a supported language on their website. The changes becomes visible throughout the web interface, but doesn’t affect the actual tweets of course. The “HOME” becomes Hum, “EXPAND” is now Expand. Kthnx., and “VIEW SUMMARY” is now View Summary. Kthnxbye!.

The idea is not really new, after all. Facebook also has English (Pirate) and English (Upside Down) as one of its supported languages. You can try the LOLcat language by going to Settings and selecting LOLCATZ (BETA) in the languuj section. Have fun!

Apple Announces the iOS 6 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

The first day of the WWDC by Apple has just finished and they announced a handful of new interesting things! But first off, the iOS 6 (although they announced this on the last part).

iOS 6 Hero

The iOS 6 brings over 200 new features to what is claimed to be the most advanced mobile operating system. Among those 200, Apple showed the 10 new major things which I will show you below.

Maps

iOS 6 Maps

Apple has yanked Google Maps on their native Maps.app on the new IOS 6. Along that they also bring in new features such as the Flyover which will let you see cities in 3D from above as if you’re on a helicopter. There’s also the most requested turn-by-turn navigation, as well as a crowd-sourced traffic information provided by anonymous users.

Siri

iOS 6 Siri

Siri learned three new things on iOS 6. She can now check info about sports, look-up for movies, and even find restaurant based on your tastes (well based on what you like). She can now also launch apps and send status updates for you. Apple even partnered up with several car manufacturers for the feature they call Eyes Free – which will basically let you talk to Siri at the press of a button on your car’s steering wheel. Siri also learned new languages. You can now talk to her in English and Canadian French, Spanish, Italian, Swiss French, Swiss German, Korean, Mandarin, and Cantonese.

Facebook

iOS 6 Facebook

As expected, the new iOS 6 brings in Facebook integration. You can now share photos, links, and even like and recommend songs and apps without even launching the app. This also brings calendar and contacts integration.

Shared Photo Streams

iOS 6 Shared Photo Streams

With the revamped Photo Stream, you can now share your photos with the people you want, most likely the people already on your contacts list. Once you share a photo with them, it will instantly appear on their devices as long as they have iOS 6 and Mac OS X Mountain Lion. You can also send links to people who doesn’t have an Apple device. They can comment and like your photos.

Passbook

iOS 6 Passbook

Apple introduced the new Passbook app which basically organizes your tickets, your cards, and other passes in one app. You can use the app to enter movie theatres and even check-in to your flights just by presenting your device. What’s even cooler is that the app is always updated with the info needed. For example it will alert you if your flight details has changed.

Facetime

iOS 6 Facetime

Finally Apple has realized they need to make Facetime work not just on Wi-Fi, but on cellular data too. This feature existed many years ago on Symbian devices. But that’s another story.

Phone

iOS 6 Phone

Apple has also revamped how the phone functionality works. When someone calls, you can now slide the screen up and you can choose whether to answer or not – and even send them a message. Perfect for “oh my God, there’s someone calling” in meetings moment. There’s also a new Do Not Disturb feature which will basically silence all calls at the time you set. Say goodbye to broken sleeps.

Mail

iOS 6 Mail

New in the Mail app is the VIP inbox which will list all your important messages from the people you choose – be it your boss, your mom, or your cousin in a far far away land. And finally… you can now attach photos and videos right from the compose screen.

Safari

iOS 6 Safari

The new Mobile Safari now have iCloud tabs which syncs your active tabs from Safari on your other devices. It also now have a full-screen mode when held in landscape as well as offline reading list.

Accessibility

iOS 6 Accessibility

There’s a new Guided Access feature that will be useful to administrators, teachers, and parents so they can restrict one’s access to just one app by disabling the home button, and limiting the touch input to specific apps.

iOS 6 will be available for iPhone 3GS or later, iPad 2 or later, and iPod touch 4th generation. It will be released this coming fall, when the new iPhone comes out.

So there you have it, the 10 major changes in the iOS 6. There’s even more for you to check out right at Apple’s website.

iOS 6 Beta Download Links Surface Ahead of WWDC

A bunch of download links for the iOS 6 beta has been posted at MacRumors a day before the WWDC.
Apple iOS 6 Beta WWDC 2012
The links came from a post at a Chinese forum weiPhone.com and clicking on the links will direct you to the page as shown above. It throws a ‘session expired’ error and prompting me to log-in and download the file again, adding more credibility on these links.
Another is that Apple seems to have dropped the support for the first generation iPad as well as the 3rd generation iPod touch, while still supporting the almost 4-year old iPhone 3GS. It can be attributed to the iPad being a device with more resolution it has to manage while it only has 256 MB of RAM than the iPhone 3GS with less resolution but with the same RAM. What I’m not sure is why Apple has dropped the support for the 3rd generation iPod even it has the same RAM as the iPhone 3GS.
A beta link for Safari 6 is included too.

The links include:

Kik Messenger is Coming to Symbian!

The popular cross-platform Kik Messenger app is coming to Symbian platform soon! I love the developer of this app. Here's what they say about the platform...

"We know why you love Symbian – it’s fast, smooth, and open. Our developers love it too! We think that the millions of Symbian users deserve beautiful, high quality apps, despite the platform’s uncertain future (and the press’ gleeful predictions of its demise)."

"We think it’s a great example of how polished and powerful Symbian apps can be when they’re made by people who love the platform."

As for the features, no worries. They've got us covered. All features are there.

"It has pictures, group, read receipts, and the same crazy speed as Kik on Android, iOS, WP7, and BlackBerry."

Now I just hope that all cross-platform and developers from other platforms is thinking of the same. We deserve apps. Quality apps. Make love for Symbian and people will love your products.

Expect the first version of the app to be released in the next few weeks.

A Look at the New Nokia Store

Bharadwaj tweeted that someone, okay he's Antonio, posted a tip at MyNokiaBlog.com that he has already installed the new Nokia Store for Symbian Belle. It looks like the MeeGo version of the store. Maybe it's because of Qt. Hmm. Can't wait for Nokia to port other apps from MeeGo to Symbian! ^_^

By the way, if someone knows or has the installer of this new Nokia Store, kindly share it. :D

UPDATE: This version is said to be version 3.16.030.
