My life is a lie! Prank your friends and win a Crumpler bag for you and him

Crumpler Hack and Prank

People of the internet, beware! A lot of social media accounts are going to be hacked this Christmas season. Yes, that’s right. Crumpler is currently running a very funny contest wherein you will have to post something humorous on one of your friends’ Facebook or Twitter accounts.

You can post something like “I was told that I was adopted. My whole life is a big lie!” or “I pooped in my pants earlier… Ugh.” It’s really up to you as to what you will post on their accounts and how you will do that (Maybe you can borrow their phone…). The funnier, the better!

And just in case your friend gets mad at you after those postings, don’t worry. Crumpler will give away a bag for you and your friend! “Hey, here. Please take my peace offering.” LOL!

Crumpler will give away a pair of bags every week for the whole month of December. So if you want to get going, check out the mechanics on their website.

Review: ASUS RT-N14U N300 Router

20131024_170754

For our home Wi-Fi, we only use the Globe-issued Aztech DSL5001EN modem and wireless router, which is fine for a small household, and an ancient Linksys WRT54G as a repeater. My main problem with the Aztech router is that it seems to only accept up to 10 devices simultaneously and that the wireless signal is not that great.

And so when ASUS held a sort of wireless routers seminar for the media, we immediately asked what can I review. I was sent the RT-N14U, a wireless N 300Mbps router which is on their entry-level lineup.

Hardware

The RT-N14U features the standard ASUS design for their routers which has their iconic shiny diamond-cube design. It has built-in antennas so there’s nothing that pokes out of the body. It can be hang on a wall on landscape or stand on its own using the in-box stand which clips to the base.

20131024_170823

There are five blue LED indicators on the front which indicates the state of USB, LAN, Wireless, WAN/Internet, and Power. The indicators light up in a cool way, it sort of follows the streaks on the diamond-cube design.

20131024_170925

On its side, there is a USB port wherein you can plug a printer, a hard drive, or a 3G/LTE modem which you can use as a backup in case your main connection goes down. There are also four LAN ports, a WAN port where the internet flows in from your home broadband modem, and the DC power in.

20131024_171004

The back is free of any ports and only shows some information related to the router like the PIN code which you may need when connecting to it for the first time. The stand that I mentioned earlier also goes in here.

Software

Setting up this router is really a breeze. Upon connecting WAN port from the broadband modem, I connected to the wireless network (which is initially open/unprotected) and fired up my browser. I was immediately greeted by the quick setup page (192.168.1.1) where I easily configured the router settings.

Setup 1Setup 2

I entered a new admin password as required, and configured the Wi-Fi SSID and password, and chose to have an automatic DHCP connection from the Aztech modem. It’s that easy.

While this setup works, you should bear in mind that you will not be able to access the router from the ‘outside’ (or from the Internet) because it only acquires an IP address from the modem, and not from the broadband network. You need to get an access from the ‘outside’ if you’re planning to use the features like AiCloud. To do so, you should configure your modem to bridge mode first, and select the PPPoE connection type on setup. You will need to type in your ADSL username and password which you can get from your ISP.

Setup 3Setup 4Setup 5 Setup 6Setup 7

Once done, I was taken to the homepage of the web dashboard. The web dashboard is presented in a way that it will look user friendly even to the normal users which doesn’t know a lot about configuring routers.

Main settings like the network map, guest networks, USB applications, and AiCloud are located on the left under ‘General’ while the more advanced settings are tucked in the bottom. Most settings come with graphical content so you can easily understand or get an idea of what a setting is all about.

Setup 9 Home

Traffic Manager, as you can guess, allows you to monitor the traffic that goes in and out of the router and see if someone is hogging all your bandwidth. Here, you can see a graph of the bandwidth being used, so if you know that you’re not downloading or uploading anything but see some high graphs, well…

Traffic Monitor

…it’s time to set up the QoS setting. This setting lets you manage traffic priorities for the router. You can, say, choose to prioritize web surfing and video calling more over ftp or peer-to-peer (e.g. torrents) connections. This way, you can balance and make the most out of your available bandwidth.

QoS

The USB modem application, as I have said before, lets you connect a USB modem (haven’t tried a mobile Wi-Fi, it may or may not work) so it can serve as a backup connection when your broadband or DSL fails. For most modems, the router will automatically initiate a 3G or LTE connection when it detects that there is no WAN connection, provided that you’ve already configured the APN settings.

USB Modem

If you’re a parent and would like to block some websites from being access on your household, you can do it as well on the RT-N14U. It supports keyword-based URL filtering as well was keyword-based website content filtering (more strict that URL filtering). The former works by blocking a URL which contains a keyword (e.g. keyword ‘tech’ will block technology.com, tech.com, and so on) while the latter will stop websites that contain a keyword from loading altogether (e.g. keyword ‘tech’ will block a website which contains the word ‘tech’ on the page, even if it doesn’t have ‘tech’ in the URL).

Filter URLFilter

The RT-N14U also supports up to three guest networks, in addition to the main network. This is really useful if you want visitors that come to your home to not be able to see your shared files in your main network, or perhaps if you have multiple rooms like gaming rooms or entertainment rooms. You can set passwords for the guest networks or leave them open, if you like. I just wish it had captive portals for the additional cool factor, though. :D

Guest WiFi 2 Guest WiFi

Unfortunately, I was not able to try the AiCloud function of the RT-N14U as I cannot get the Aztech modem to work in bridge mode (looks like Globe hid the function away from users). AiCloud works by uploading the contents of a connected drive online and making it accessible from right about anywhere. It’s like having your own Dropbox or Google Drive. The only difference is that the storage limit depends on the capacity of the drive connected to the router.

Performance

In terms of signal reach, the RT-N14U performed exceptionally better than the Aztech modem that we were using before (of course). In my bedroom (which is behind three concrete walls) where I used to get an average of 1 bar (out of 4) of signal on my Note 2 and 1 (out of 3) on my iPad mini, I am now getting significantly improved signal of around 3 to 4 bars on the Note 2 and full bars on my iPad mini, which results on more stable connections and less data dropouts.

File transfers between my devices are quite fast too. I get around 30 to 40 megabits/second (3.75 to 5MB/second) when downloading a file from my phone using AirDroid. On my iPad mini, I get a much faster speeds ranging 60 to 80 megabits/second (7.5 to 10MB/second) using the VLC app. Syncing on iTunes over Wi-Fi has also gotten much faster than when I was using the other modem.

While the real world tests I conducted are far from what the router promised (it depends on the Wi-Fi chips your devices use, by the way), it still showed a noticeable increase in speeds and delivered great signal strengths over a conventional router.

However, the RT-N14U does not support third-party firmware like DD-WRT and Tomato. So if you’re planning on flashing this, take note.

Verdict

The ASUS RT-N14U delivered what it promised. It makes setting up a router an easy task rather than a head-scratching one and offers great features like guest networks, USB applications (printer sharing, 3G/LTE fallback), and even a torrent downloader (Download Master) which lets you do downloads without the need to leave your computer on all the time.

The performance is stellar and just what you expects from an entry-level router. The others features are clearly just an icing on the cake.

The ASUS RT-N14U router retails for P2,890.

Digits Trading brings Tech21 Impactology cases in the Philippines

Tech21 Impactology Cases Philippines

There’s a new interesting brand for smartphone and tablets that has recently entered the country, and they’re called Tech21.

Tech21’s Impactology (what a word :-P) cases gives your devices the ultimate protection from the likes of bumps or drops, thanks to the revolutionary D3O material used on their cases.

What’s D3O. you ask? Well, it’s that orange thing that’s present on their cases. You can find them along the corners where impacts usually happen and extends to the sides. It's made up of a non-Newtonian polymer with an intelligent molecular structure. Those molecules are free-moving when there’s no impact. But when there is, they all ‘freeze up’ together to absorb the impact force and spread the shockwave to the surface. By doing that, they help keep your device in tiptop condition. The technology used in D3O is widely used in protection gears like helmets for military use worldwide. That should give you an idea on how strong it actually is.

Back to the cases, Tech21’s Impactology cases has now reached our shores courtesy of Digits Trading. They currently have cases for the iPhone 5, iPad mini, and the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Impact Maze – P1,250
Impact Shell – P1,250

Western Digital launches the WD Blue, the thinnest 1TB hard drive yet, for P6,990

Western Digital WD Blue 1TB

Western Digital recently announced the WD Blue at Computex Taipei 2013. The 1-terabyte hard drive, which measures just 7mm in height, is now the thinnest ever.

The reduced thickness of the hard drive allows laptop OEMs and manufactures to build products with thinner and lighter profile without sacrificing the storage capacity. The WD Blue is also compatible with the 9.5mm hard drive slots found on most of laptops today.

"Users with large portfolios of content no longer need to sacrifice capacity when buying an Ultrabook or upgrading to a thin and light notebook. This most compact 1TB hard drive to-date offers manufacturers of systems an upsell path for their customers who will now be able to choose systems offering both sleek design and high capacity," said Matt Rutledge, Vice President and General Manager for client storage products at Western Digital.

In spite of its thinner profile, the WD Blue has still managed to include several features which make it compelling to the consumers as well as OEMs.

· Shock Tolerance – WD’s ShockGuard™ technology protects the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks.
· Cool and quiet - WD’s exclusive WhisperDrive™ technology enables quiet performance.
· StableTrac™ – The motor shaft is secured at both ends to compensate for system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking during read and write operations which enables consistently higher performance.
· Dual Stage Actuators – Leveraged from enterprise-class drives, dual stage actuators utilize two actuators to improve positional accuracy over the data track(s). The primary actuator provides coarse displacement using conventional electromagnetic actuator principles. The secondary actuator uses piezoelectric motion to fine tune the head positioning to a higher degree of accuracy.
· Reliable – WD’s SecurePark™ parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down, and when the drive is off. This ensures the recording head never touches the disk surface resulting in improved long term reliability due to less head wear, and improved non-operational shock tolerance.
· Compatibility Tested - WD performs tests on hundreds of systems and a multitude of platforms in its FIT Lab™ and Mobile Compatibility Lab to give customers confidence that drives will work in specific systems.

The WD Blue 2.5-inch mobile hard drive comes in capacities ranging from 320GB up to 1TB. It looks like only the 1TB model is making its way here in the Philippines though, with it having a pricing tag of P6,990.

Globe lauds NTC on imposing ban on illegal repeaters

Globe AirBoost Femtocell

Globe Telecom expressed approval on the recent memorandum order the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) which prohibits the use of illegal and unregistered mobile signal repeaters.

The order came in light of the reports of weak and erratic mobile signal caused by interference of the said repeaters. Such devices come in form of outdoor and indoor antennas which are intended to boost the signal in areas with weak or no service. However, using devices outside of the optimum settings usually cause undesirable results such as signal degradation which affects other subscribers in surrounding places, which in turn, is blamed on the carriers.

Signal repeaters are not really prohibited in the country as long as it is properly installed and operated. In fact, Globe offers an indoor solution, a femtocell, which they call the AirBoost (pictured above). A femtocell amplifies and repeats the signal available and requires and connects to your home broadband connection to transmit the data (SMS, calls, mobile data) to the network.

Nokia unveils a dust-and-water-resistant shell for the Lumia 620

Nokia Lumia 620 Protective Shell Dust and Water Resistant

Nokia just announced a new shell for the Lumia 620 with IP54 certification, providing the device a protection from dust and water splashes.

As opposed to most rugged cases available on the market, the CC-3061 makes use of the removable back cover on the Lumia 620. As such, it easily clips on to the device without making it bulkier. Harri Vuolle, Lumia Product Manager at Nokia, explained that the shell has better sealing protection between the gaps on the camera window, the shell itself, and the display. The opening on the loudspeaker is also denser to prevent the water and dust from penetrating easily.

Nokia says the new accessory will hit selected markets at the end of March and will have a suggested retail price of €25 or about P1,300.

You can read more about the accessory here.

Does cell signal suck at your home? Globe AirBoost is the solution to it

Globe AirBoost Femtocell

Cell signal at our home on every carrier is really bad, thanks to the 3-storey apartment beside our lot (I wonder why our subdivision let it be built right there!). At most, we often get zero to 2 signal bars inside (average of –107 dBm, which is considered beyond the weak level already) and around 2-3 outside.

It is really frustrating since it has so many effects, fast battery draining on devices, dropped and missed calls, and delayed text messages. So frustrating that it made me to ask someone working for a mobile network company on who do I get in touch with in regards to requesting a cell tower for our area, I mean, is it even the right thing to do? Anyway, that person has told me that requesting a cell tower is not as easy as abc (but I hope my request gets submitted) as the company needs to assess many factors, one of which I assume, is the market. So, requesting for a cell tower is not certainly a choice, but there is another choice. A femtocell. I was a little bit surprised by the answer, and after a bit of digging, I found these..

Globe AirBoost Femtocell (2)

The Globe AirBoost. Globe AirBoost is a femtocell, a device which acts like a small cell tower which can be placed inside homes or other places with weak cellular signals. It amplifies and repeats the signal available and requires and connects to your home broadband connection to transmit the data (SMS, calls, mobile data) to the network. It is quite common in other countries like the US and UK but I didn’t know until yesterday that Globe also offers a femtocell.

Here are some key facts about Globe AirBoost:
- Femtocell used is the NEC FP810
- Allows 8 simultaneous calls
- Uses a SIM card
- Energy consumption is <5w
- Works with GSM 900MHz (Band VIII) and 1800MHz (Band III)
- Works with 3G 850MHz (Band V), 1900MHz (Band II), and 2100MHz (Band I)
- Up to 14.4Mbps downlink and 5.76Mbps uplink (still depends on the broadband connection it hooks into, i.e. if your home broadband has a speed of 5Mbps, then the maximum speed the femtocell can get should be less than or equal to 5Mbps)

Globe AirBoost FemtocellThe Globe AirBoost in action. Note the 'Globe@AirBoost' carrier name.

Don’t get your hopes up though, the Globe AirBoost is only available for Platinum subscribers, that is, those who can pay P5,000 or P10,000 a month for their phone service.

What am I hoping is that Globe should offer the AirBoost to anyone who always experience weak cell signal at their place (which should be verified by e.g. site visit) even for a fee. For example, the AT&T offers the MicroCell for around $150, I even saw at their forums that some get it free if they are on an area with no coverage at all since it is cheaper than putting up a cell tower.

What do you think? Do you need Globe AirBoost? Are you willing to pay for it? How much?

Review: Noreve Leather Case for GALAXY Note 10.1

9 copy

Cases are now almost becoming a norm for mobile devices out there, especially since not all are built to resist wear and tear. These cases vary by design, functionality, and the price. In this review, we’ll feature the Noreve Tradition Leather Case for the Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1.

PART 1: Packaging

The case comes nicely presented in an elegant-looking packaging. It is evident on the premium box the case sits in as well as the actual cloth covering for the case itself. This is a really nice touch and is good for gifts and presents. My only suggestion is that they should offer an option for a simple packaging with a lesser price tag.

15 copy 14 copy13 copy 11 copy

PART 2: Design and Functionality

The external part of the case is hand-made from real leather, which has that addicting smell that’s immediately noticeable when you unbox it. It’s internal seems to be made of a synthetic leather with a soft-touch. It has openings for the ports and buttons on the top which means you don’t have to take it out just to access those.

2 copy 8 copy

It also has a small cut-out for the S Pen which is really handy and easily accessible. Three ridges on the cover allows you to position the Note 10.1 at different angles which is useful when you’re watching a video, or using it on your lap for browsing the web or other functions.

14 copy 15 copy
5 copy 7 copy

The case has a flap on the side which clips on the top of the Note 10.1 when you close it. It doesn’t scratch the side of the Note 10.1 as the flap is still made of real leather. A cut-out for the charging port on the bottom is also there, which lets you charge it without the need to have the case open. An opening is present on the back for the camera and LED flash, of course.

6 copy 10 copy

The Verdict

The Noreve Tradition Leather Case delivers what it is expected to do. It protects the Note 10.1 from an scratches and offers extra functionality as well without the small compromises other cases have. It is also well made, and has a premium quality which I expect will last long on everyday use.

The good
Real leather
Premium quality
Offers access for ports and buttons
Comfortable landscape usage

The bad
Quite pricey, they should offer a simpler packaging option

The Noreve Tradition Leather Case for the Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1 is available at their website for $106.20, which might easily sound expensive for some. There are a variety of textures and colors that you can choose from.
