Globe rolls out prepaid LTE SIM cards

Globe Prepaid LTE SIM

Hello to all my readers. I’ve been quite busy in the past few months and didn’t post anything new since September. But there’s this news that I think is worth posting.

So, Globe just announced that prepaid LTE SIM cards are now (finally) available. And we’re not talking about the Tattoo Prepaid LTE SIM cards that were out since September 2012 – what they have now is the LTE SIM cards for Globe Prepaid accounts.

The Globe Prepaid LTE SIM cards will come in dual-cut (mini and micro) and nano sizes. The dual-cut ones cost P40 while the nano ones are P75. For those who don’t want to let go of their phone numbers, you can have your SIM replaced with an LTE one at Globe Stores.

You’d need a Globe Prepaid LTE SIM card if you have an LTE device such as an iPhone (5/5c/5s/6/6 Plus), Samsung Galaxy (S5/S4) or other smartphones that support LTE.

For more info, check out their website.

Google Play carrier billing comes to Globe

Screenshot_2014-08-24-14-16-57

At the first day of Globe Telecom’s Digital Lifestyle Expo at the SM Megamall, the company announced that carrier billing for the Google Play Store is finally coming. With carrier billing, anyone using an Android smartphone on Globe will now be able to buy apps, games, and even rent or purchase movies and have it paid thru their plan or deducted from their prepaid credits – no more credit, debit, or prepaid cards needed. Getting more in-game coins on various titles is now also possible.

Globe’s Peter Bithos says this feature has been in the works for quite some time now. A hint of what’s coming appeared early last year on the Play Store, only to leave users waiting.

Globe is now unlocking out-of-contract iPhones

Globe iPhone Official Carrier Factory Unlock

Good news to owners of Globe-issued iPhones. Globe is now offering official iPhone unlocks for eligible customers. Unlocking an iPhone allows the user to use a SIM card from another network and could be particularly useful if travelling abroad, or if the user decides to give or sell the device.

To be eligible, the device must be out of contract and that you still have an active account with Globe. The account owner where the device was originally tagged must be the one who initiate an unlock request.

Customers who need to unlock their iPhone should get in touch with Globe thru their hotline (730-1000 or 211) or live chat representatives. If eligible, a customer will be given a reference number for the unlock request and will have to wait for 5 days. Samsung devices are also supported.

We were not immediately able to verify if prepaid iPhone and Samsung devices purchased from Globe can be unlocked as well. We’ll post an update if we get more info.

Globe to offer 15GB of data for P2,499 on new GoSurf plans; P2 per MB overage

Globe Telecom Logo

Starting next week, Globe will replace its PowerSurf postpaid and prepaid data plans with the new GoSurf data plans. This comes after their fair usage policy generated negative reactions from their subscribers, mostly from those who are on contracts.

The previously-unlimited P999 monthly plan will now only give you 5GB of data, with a P2 per-MB overage charge when you exceed of allocation. Those wanting to get more amount of data may get the pricier 10GB plan at P1,799, or the 15GB plan at P2,499. Below is the table for the complete matrix of the new GoSurf plans.

Price Data Allowance Anti-Bill Shock Cap
P99 100MB P1,500
P299 700MB P1,500
P499 1.5GB P1,500
P799 3GB P1,500
P999 5GB P1,500
P1,799 10GB P3,000
P2,499 15GB P3,000

As you may have expected, when it comes to this type of data plan with a per-MB overage charge, Globe will implement anti-bill shock measures as well. Plans P999 and below will have an amount cap of P1,500 while Plans P1,799 and P2,499 have an amount cap of P3,000. These measures are there to prevent subscribers from racking up huge amount of bills from excessive data usage. Lastly, GoSurf plans, being a volume-based plan, are exempt from the fair usage policy also known as FUP.

The GoSurf data plans will be available for prepaid and postpaid starting April 13. Registration is done by texting GOSURFxxx (e.g. GOSURF999) to 8888.

Samsung Galaxy S5 arriving on April 11 for P34,990; also coming to Smart and Globe

fr_1585

If there’s one smartphone manufacturer who’s a master in releasing flagship devices globally in one fell swoop, it would be Samsung. Almost every year since the Galaxy S3, the Korean company has been announcing and shipping their flagship smartphone in span of weeks across many countries all at the same time. The Galaxy S5 is no exception.

Come April 11, the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be released and made available at retail stores in the Philippines for P34,990. In addition to being available unlocked, the Galaxy S5 will be offered by carriers Smart and Globe on their postpaid plans.

fr_1517

Smart is offering the Galaxy S5 at Plan 999 with P800 monthly payment for a total of P1,799 a month for 24 months. That comes with unlimited LTE data, 9 minutes, and 99 texts to all networks. You can also get it at Unlimited Data Plan 2000 for free on a 30-month contract, which includes 150 minutes and 200 texts to all networks.

The Galaxy S5 is also available on Globe for P1,699 a month at Plan 999 with P600 monthly payment and comes with 5GB of LTE data, 5 minutes, and 100 texts to all networks. It’s also offered for P1,799 a month at Plan 1299 with P500 month payment which comes with 25 minutes, 500 texts to all networks, and the same amount of LTE data.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 sports a couple of new features that you may like. Among those is the upgraded 16-megapixel camera which can now focus at a subject in just 0.3 seconds. It now also has an advanced HDR that makes photos under conditions with intense lighting more natural, such as when you’re taking a photo of the horizon with the sky. It now also does ‘bokeh’ shots with the Selective Focus feature.

fr_1515

Another interesting and useful (hopefully) thing on the Galaxy S5 is the Download Booster. What it does is it combines your Wi-Fi and LTE connection, if present, so you can get faster download speeds on your phone. Of course, this would depend on how fast your carrier’s LTE network and the active Wi-Fi network is.

The Galaxy S5 comes with a built-in heart rate sensor, located below the main camera. This would be helpful if you want to quickly check your heart rate (in bpm) say after a quick run. You can access it within the improved S Health application, which can now track your steps taken with a pedometer.

Samsung also made the Galaxy S5 more life-proof. It now carries an IP67-certification, which means it can resist water and dust under certain conditions. Yes, it also means the microUSB port is covered. And perhaps the most interesting feature of the Galaxy S5 is the Ultra Power Saving Mode. With that turned on, the phone can last up to 12.5 days. That’s quite a feat considering we’re talking about a smartphone. How can they do that? It turns off most of the unnecessary features and makes the display black-and-white only to conserve power. Also, as long as the Ultra Power Save Mode is active, you will be limited to some stock apps only such as phone, messaging, browser, calculator, etc.

Price of fast home internet in the Philippines is going down

Globe Tattoo Home Broadband Platinum Plans

The beginning of 2014 has been through a rocky start — at least on the side of the networks. Globe started to strictly enforce its fair-use policy for mobile data connections which garnered a lot of mixed, mostly negative reactions from their subscribers. They should work that out.

Anyway, the main reason I wrote this post is to share an interesting development on home broadband. A couple of years ago, PLDT and Globe introduced fiber connections to the market. Fiber used to cost a lot of money back then. A 100-megabit connection came at P20,000 a month — PLDT still charges the same today. Fast forward to present day and it’s already down to P11,999 on Globe. I know, still a bit expensive. But that’s a huge difference!

Hopefully Globe will expand its fiber coverage so they can get this kind of fast home internet to everyone and PLDT will follow their new pricing.

See it for yourself. Head over here to check Globe’s Tattoo Platinum Plans and here for PLDT’s Fibr Plans.

Globe Telecom iPad Air iPad mini with Retina display Postpaid Plans Philippines

As expected, Globe announced on Monday, December 9 that they will be carrying the cellular versions of the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display on their postpaid plans starting on December 19. The iPads will be available with unlimited LTE data, though the pricing for those plans haven’t been revealed yet.

The iPad Air features a new design, similar to that of the iPad mini. It is 20% thinner at only 7.5mm, 28% lighter at just one pound, and still can go for up to 10-hour of video playback time. The iPad mini with Retina display, on the other hand, now packs a higher-resolution display, just like the Air. Both models have the new A7 CPU with M7 motion-coprocessor, 2x faster Wi-Fi, and improved LTE with support for even more bands as well as MIMO.

Globe, Smart, and Sun provides Typhoon Yolanda victims with 25 SMS daily for 5 days

Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) Philippines

Photo: NOAA/AFP/Getty Images

In a response to the damage, catastrophe, and difficulties in communications brought about by Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda here in the Philippines), the three mobile network operators in the country — Globe, Smart, and Sun — have jointly agreed to provide customers and victims in typhoon-hit areas in Visayas with 25 SMS daily starting tomorrow until November 17. These SMS can be used to send local and international messages. This service will be available in Leyte, Samar, Cebu, Aklan, Antique, and Capiz.

Globe and TM customers can send BangonPinoy to 8888 to avail of the free service. Customers on Smart, Sun, and Talk ‘N Text will automatically receive the credits at the start of each day.

The massive howler crashed ashore in the Leyte and Samar provinces on Friday morning, which is feared to have left up to 10,000 people dead. The typhoon packed winds of up to 315 kilometers per hour with gusts of up to 385 km/h, making it one of the strongest to have ever formed in the planet.

Globe wants to give you an iPhone every year on its iPhone Forever Plans

Globe iPhone 5S Postpaid Plans Philippines

Globe Telecom today announced their new iPhone Forever Plans. The new plans allows you to sign up (or renew) a 2-year contract and get an iPhone every year for without paying anything (aside from the monthly plan, that is).

So how does the Globe iPhone Forever Plans work? Let’s say you want to get an iPhone 5s. The lowest plan for the 5s costs P1,599 a month and includes 1GB of LTE data and P601 of consumable amount, which I assume you can use to avail of combos like texts and calls. Now, on the 13th month of your contract, you can get a new iPhone (assuming that the next one is out) without paying anything and without extending your contract — as long as you trade in your old 5s that you got when you signed up. Once your 2-year contract is up, you can renew again and get another iPhone by doing the same process.

Below is the table of the iPhone Forever Plans on Globe.

iPhone Forever Plan Plan 1599 Plan 1999 Plan 2999 Plan 5599 Plan 6999

Want to sign up already? Here’s the table of the eligible devices that you can trade in.

All said, the iPhone Forever Plans is only suited for those who want to get a new phone every year without breaking or renewing their contract. It would have been better though if Globe has an option wherein you can keep your current phone at a fee.

For those that prefers the normal plans, the iPhone 5c is available at Plan 999 with P800 monthly cashout while the iPhone 5s starts at P1,799 with P400 monthly cashout. Both plans come with unlimited LTE data and consumables that you can use towards combos and boosters.

The iPhone 5s features the new A7 64-bit chip, an improved 8-megapixel iSight camera with True Tone flash, and a fingerprint scanner for Touch ID, which lets you securely unlock your phone using your finger. The iPhone 5c, meanwhile, sports a colorful plastic design, the A6 chip, and an 8-megapixel camera. Both iPhones are still carrying a 4-inch Retina display and supports LTE networks.

The iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S launched in December 2012 and 2011, respectively. This development makes it the fastest iPhone launch to ever happen in the country. Interested parties can go to Globe’s website to register. No plans and pricing details have been announce as of yet.

Globe offers free access to Facebook to its 36 million customers

Screenshot_2013-10-18-23-48-12-2

Yesterday, Facebook executives flew all the way to Manila from California to announce their new partnership with Globe Telecom. The new collaboration between the two aims to bring an early holiday gift to the carrier’s more than 36 million customers which is: free usage of Facebook across many devices.

Globe says they worked with the engineers at Facebook to come up with a seamless integration of the free offering on various platforms like their mobile website and apps. For one, customers who use Facebook on Globe’s wireless network will be shown that they are not being charged (see screenshot above and below).

Screenshot_2013-10-18-23-50-15-3

As a way to prevent users from getting their prepaid balance ‘eaten’, Facebook has set up a notification page whenever users click on a link leading to other websites, say Instagram, with a one-click registration to Globe’s data plans. Plans (or promos, if you want) that are displayed will depend on a user’s available prepaid balance, and if you don’t have any, you will be able to borrow or loan 10MB for P10 which will be deducted on your next reload.

Globe is actively rolling out free Facebook access to its 36 million prepaid (TM included) and postpaid customers and targets to cover them all by October 31. You can know more about the free Facebook offering by dialing *143# and choosing ‘FREE FB’.

Is Globe offering free Facebook access?

Screenshot_2013-10-18-23-48-12-2

If the new banners within the Facebook app for Android are of any indication, then we might see free access to the social networking site in the near future.

Earlier, while I was using the Facebook app just how I normally would on my phone, a splash screen asked me if I want to use Facebook without data charges (read: free) on Globe. I accepted it out of curiosity and lo and behold, a banner below the main action buttons on the app (see screenshot above) is now stating that “(I am) using Facebook for free with Globe and TM." I checked my balance and I indeed didn't get charged for the usage.

Moreover, this free Facebook offering from Globe seems to be more integrated with the app than I expected. Clicking on links to other websites outside of Facebook (e.g. Instagram, YouTube, etc) warns me that standard data charges would now apply. In the same screen, there are options to proceed normally (and get charged at P5/15 minutes) or to buy a 10MB data for P10. I tried the latter and I received an SMS that says I now have 10MB of data. It worked.

Screenshot_2013-10-18-23-51-44 Screenshot_2013-10-18-23-52-12

Could this be a new unannounced offering from Globe which just slipped into the app? For the record, I’m using a beta version of the Facebook app from the Google Play Store. It is possible that this is indeed the case. Have you seen this on the app on your phone, too? If you did, sound off in the comments section below.

We’re getting more info from the folks at Facebook and Globe Telecom and will post updates if we hear back from them.

Globe first to offer unlimited calls and texts to all networks

Globe Unlimited Calls and Texts to All Networks Smart Sun Cellular Globe

Globe Telecom has announced that they are now offering unlimited calls and texts to all networks, a first in the country.

The new offering, however, is initially available for Globe Platinum subscribers only — specifically, those who subscribe to the new All-Net Plan 5000 and All-Net Plan 10000. Those subscribers get unlimited data and unlimited calls and texts to all networks (Smart, Sun Cellular, Globe).

Aside from those unlimited services, Plan 5000 customers get P1,000 monthly consumable which they can use for other services like roaming, international calls, landline calls, etc., a 1-month subscription for Gadget Care insurance, an LTE smartphone (iPhone 5 16GB, Samsung Galaxy S4, or BlackBerry Q10), and a Platinum Elite membership.

Plan 10000 customers, on the other hand, get to have a P5,500 monthly consumable which can be shared with up to 2 extension lines, DUO and Gadget Care subscription for the length of the contract, an LTE smartphone (Samsung Galaxy Note 3 + Galaxy Tab 3 Wi-Fi, Samsung Galaxy S4 + Galaxy Tab 3 Wi-Fi, iPhone 5 32GB, or BlackBerry Q10 + BlackBerry 9320), and a Platinum Elite membership.

The rich really get to enjoy great services, no? Let’s hope Globe brings this to their other postpaid plans too, heck, even on prepaid!

Globe launches Tattoo Prepaid LTE Mobile Wi-Fi and Dongle

Globe Tattoo Prepaid LTE Mobile Wi-Fi

Globe’s LTE has been already available for almost a year now, but it’s been only limited to their postpaid customers. Finally, after several months, they are now making LTE available to prepaid customers as well.

Affordable Prepaid LTE Devices

First up, the Globe Tattoo Prepaid LTE Mobile Wi-Fi, which, as its name suggests, is a pocket Wi-Fi device that lets you connect your Wi-Fi enabled devices, or hook it up to your computer thru USB. It can accommodate up to 10, so you can also share it with some of your friends and family members when on-the-go. The device itself is a Huawei E5776, a Cat. 4 LTE modem which theoretically supports up to 150Mbps, though Globe is only promising up to 42Mbps, probably as to not to disappoint customers. It is powered by a large 3000mAh battery which Globe reps say can actually charge other mobile devices. The kicker — it’s relatively affordable at just P4,995. Just so you know, this particular Huawei device sells for around P11,000 in other stores.

The other device, the Globe Tattoo Prepaid LTE Dongle/Stick, is a smaller device which only connects to your computer (and some Android devices with USB host support). I am not sure what specific device they are using for this, but it surely supports LTE up to 42Mbps (theoretically up to 100Mbps). It’s available for only P3,995.

A prepaid LTE SIM card will be also available for P299 and Globe says they will have enough stocks of it.

Prepaid LTE Plans

The two Globe LTE prepaid devices come with free 5GB data allowance initially valid for 7 days. After consuming that, you can opt for their MaxSurf subscriptions, which are volume-based. The 3-day 700MB plan costs P100, the 5-day 1200MB plan is P170, and the 15-day 3500MB plan costs P500. They did not mention if PowerSurf or SuperSurf prepaid plans will work with LTE, though I’ll ask.

I think that, if they really don’t allow unlimited data plans on LTE, it’s because they don’t want to let the network get constrained and congested easily, which is already happening on Smart (not to bash them, but it really is happening) in some areas especially if it’s densely populated. After all, LTE is still a wireless network just like 3G. :-)

LTE Coverage

Globe says LTE is now available in Makati, Pasig, Quezon City, Taguig, Manila, Muntinlupa, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Las Piñas, Cebu City, Davao City, and most cities in Bohol, Batangas, Negros Occidental, La Union, Rizal, Aklan (including Boracay), Laguna, Bataan, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Cavite, Cagayan, Pangasinan, Isabela, Ilocos, Quirino, and Tarlac. They are saying that they are continuing their aggressive LTE roll-out to cover more cities and provinces in the country.

Globe Tattoo launches rewards program for mobile broadband

Globe Tattoo Rewards Plus

For a few weeks now, Globe has been offering a rewards program for their Tattoo mobile broadband customers. The program is almost identical to Globe Rewards from the prepaid and postpaid customers.
