Here’s how you clear App Store update history on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If for some reason you want to get rid of the App Store update history on your iOS device, read on. Apple didn’t include a way to easily clear that list out by default, and I’ve never seen anyone share a way how to do that either, even thru a workaround.

So let me share you a one-step procedure on how to do just that. Simply go to Settings, then General, and then Date & Time on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and set the date 10 days forward. If today is January 12, set it to January 22. Open App Store and head to the Updates sectioin. Voila, the history are gone! Don’t forget to revert the date back.

Good news to Android and iOS (and former BlackBerry) users! The ever familiar BBM is set to arrive on Android on September 21 and on iOS on September 22. This is the first time the popular messaging service goes cross-platform.

It also lets you know when your message is delivered and if your friend has read it. BBM Group lets you start group chats and can accommodate up to 30 users.

Want to send a message to all your contacts in an instant? There’s Broadcast Message for that. Also, you can post status messages and update your profile picture in the Updates section of your profile. And, last but not the least, you get your own BBM PIN that you give out to others so they can add you while maintaining your personal information like email and phone number.

Moreover, BlackBerry plans to add BBM Video Calling and BBM Voice to its Android and iOS apps in a future update.

You will be able to download BBM for Android starting 7PM on September 21 from the Google Play Store. The iOS version will be release at 12:01AM on September 22 in the App Store.

Apple starts selling unlocked iPhone 5 in the Philippines

Unlocked Apple iPhone 5 Philippines 2

It’s been a long time coming, but now Apple has finally decided to sell unlocked iPhone 5 units in the Philippines. Long before, iPhones were only sold thru carriers like Globe, which offered the iPhone 3G as its first in 2008. Smart have since joined Globe in 2011 at the launch of the iPhone 4S.

The 16GB iPhone 4S and the 8GB iPhone 4 also joins the aforementioned device too. Both will retail for P28,425 and P19,415 respectively. Quite expensive for old generation devices I know, but hey, it’s Apple we’re talking about here.

Facebook Messenger now allows you to make free calls to your friends

Facebook Messenger Calls

If you’re an avid Facebook user with a lot of people on your friends list, then take a quick read at this. Facebook, in the past couple of days (or has it been weeks already?) lifted the geographical restriction on VoIP calls on its Messenger app for Android and iOS. That easily means you can now call your anyone as long as you are ‘friends’ with them on the website and that they have the app installed on their phones or tablets.

Facebook Messenger Calls Screenshot Facebook Messenger Calls Screenshot 2

To start a call with someone, simply tap on their name on the friends list on the Messenger app and hit that little ‘I’ icon on the top-right corner of the screen. If they have the app installed and have an active connection, the ‘Free Call’ button will be shown in white, tap it to initiate the free call. Otherwise, it will be shown in grey.

The advantage of this over other VoIP apps? Everyone’s on Facebook.

Twitter launches photo filters to take on Instagram

You might have already heard the news that Instagram has put an end to its support for Twitter cards integration, which allows users of the social networking site to view photos directly on a tweet. Things has gotten a little more nasty today as Twitter, decided to add their own photo filters powered by Aviary on their own mobile apps on iOS and Android to take on Instagram (and Facebook?) directly.

2012-12-11-15-19-55

From now on, you will be offered an option to add one of the eight filters on your photo every time that you try to upload one. Filters include Vignette, Black & white, Warm, Cool, Vintage, Cinematic, Happy, and Gritty. Also available is cropping and the auto-enhancement of photos.

Although the selection is not as extensive as that of Instagram’s, this new addition to Twitter’s mobile apps would definitely do. In addition, photos edited using the new editor are fully integrated with Twitter cards on the web, saving many users from an extra click when using Instagram. The updated app is now available on Android and will be shortly released on App Store for iOS.

What do you think of this new feature on Twitter’s mobile apps? Will you use this or you’ll stick to Instagram?

Apple announces the iPad mini and 4th generation iPad

Several hours ago, Apple announced the long-rumored iPad mini. They have also released the 4th generation iPad.

iPad mini Philippines

iPad mini

The iPad mini features a smaller 7.9-inch display than the iPad with a 1024x768 resolution, which is the same as the iPad 2. It’s also 23% thinner than the iPad, just 7.2mm thin and 53% lighter at 0.68 pounds. Powering the iPad mini is the dual-core A5 processor, again, the same as on the iPad 2. The battery life is rated at 10 hours, which is the same as every other iPad.

iPad mini side view

More over, the iPad have a FaceTime HD camera on the front, and a 5 Megapixels iSight camera on the back. It can record full HD 1080p videos. For the second time now, Siri makes its way to the iPad — this time in the iPad mini. Lastly, it has LTE. It supports a wide array of LTE frequencies including the ones used by Smart and Globe.

The iPad mini is priced starting $329 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model and as much as $659 for the 64GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model. Pricing for the Philippines is not yet announced, though there was an alleged pricing for the country that leaked out a couple days ago.

LEAKED: Alleged iPad mini Pricing for the Philippines

iPad 4th generation

Goodbye the new iPad, hello iPad 4th generation. That’s right. In an unexpected move, Apple announced the 4th generation iPad which now includes the A6X processor, a FaceTime HD camera, an improved and expanded Wi-Fi and LTE networks support, and the Lightning connector. Pricing will remain the same but it remains unclear on when will it land in the Philippine shores. Apple also yanked the 3rd generation iPad on it’s online store, that means, yes, it’s now obsolete.

Hate Apple Maps? Here’s how you can replace it with Google or Nokia Maps with the original icon!

Did you update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 6 and regret doing so? Because, you know, Apple’s own mapping solution (for the record: provided by TomTom) is not any better than Google Maps which was bundled on the previous versions of iOS.

Fret not! You can have the web-version of Google Maps with the original iOS icon by installing the configuration profiles Twitter user @benguild created. and run in it full-screen without the Mobile Safari URL and navigation bars. Just visit his blog for the complete steps which are very easy to do.

And, inspired by that nifty workaround, I present my own one – the full-screen Nokia Maps web app. Read on for more.

2012-09-30T17-39-14_0

Nokia has their own mobile web version of their mapping solution, but they don’t have a native app for iOS yet. So I tried doing what @benguild did and voila, a native Nokia Maps web app!

Just install the web profile on your iOS device and if you have a password set, enter it, and done. Check your home screen for your new web app!

Apple TV now officially being sold in the Philippines, iTunes Gift Cards Soon?

A little more than a month after Apple opened it’s iTunes Store here in the Philippines, they are coming up again this time, with the release of Apple TV.

Apple TV Philippines

The Apple TV, which appeared as early as August 14, sells for P4,990 at the Apple Online Store and ships in 3-5 business days and as usual, you get free shipping for orders over P3,000.

Apple TV Philippines Product Shot

Another thing that I noticed new to the online store is that you can now receive SMS notifications for your item when in transit. Simply include your phone number when checking out to receive notifications. SMS notifications will be sent between 8 AM to 9 PM

Apple Store Philippines Text Notifications

Lastly, there’s a rumor that Apple will soon sell iTunes Gift Cards for use in the Philippine iTunes Store. If this would turn out to be true, then it’s another plus for Apple as more people would now be able to purchase content at iTunes because as everyone knows, signing up for a credit card is a pain.

When asked for a comment, however, Apple simply replied…

“Apple does not comment on rumour or speculation.”

How to protect your iOS devices from theft

Are you a person who always forgot where did you put a thing, say your phone? If you just nodded, then read on. I will teach you how to protect your iOS devices from the prickly hands of others.

Find My iPhone

You might be already familiar with the icon above. Yes, that’s Find My iPhone. First thing you’ll do is to set-up Find My iPhone on your device using iCloud. After that, you’re done! NOT. Pick-pockets and thieves could simply disable the Find My iPhone service on your device to prevent you from locating it. What should I do? Well, you will have to use Restrictions. Follow the steps below, assuming that you’re done setting up Find My iPhone.

NOTE: Instructions posted here is based on an iPod touch running iOS 6.
1. Go to Settings, General, Restrictions. You will be asked to set a Restrictions Passcode for the first time.

2012-08-13T22-52-17_1

2. Under Allow Changes, tap Accounts.

2012-08-13T22-52-17_2

3. Tap Don’t Allow Changes.

2012-08-13T22-52-17_3

And just like that, the iCloud, Accounts (under Mail, Contacts, Calendars), Messages, FaceTime, iTunes & App Stores, Photo Stream (under Photos & Camera), Twitter, Facebook, as well as the Find My iPhone (under Privacy, Location Services) settings will become disabled and greyed out. You and anyone will not be able to change any of those settings unless you select Allow Changes again under Restrictions.

2012-08-13T22-52-17_5

2012-08-13T22-52-17_6

By the way, speaking of Photo Stream – you may want to turn on Photo Streams before turning on the restrictions. Who knows, if a thief snagged your device and took self-photos, you will be able to see his or her face!

2012-08-13T22-52-17_4

While the last will be probably be useful for iPhones and iPads with a cellular data connection, you may just forget about setting a passcode lock on your iPod touch and/or iPad with a Wi-Fi only connection so just in case, the thief will have a chance to find a wireless network and connect to it thus allowing your to still locate them.

UPDATE: I forgot one thing. If you have a jailbroken device then you’re in for this. Open Cydia, and search for ResetAllKiller tweak. That will basically grey out and disable the Reset All Settings buttons on the Settings. This will make it a little bit hard for the part of the thief to completely wipe your device and prevent you from tracking it. Here it is in action.

2012-08-14T00-23-38_0

Now the last thing to do is set-up iCloud on your Macs or PCs. You may also bookmark iCloud.com on your web browser for easy use.
