Samsung Galaxy S5 arriving on April 11 for P34,990; also coming to Smart and Globe

fr_1585

If there’s one smartphone manufacturer who’s a master in releasing flagship devices globally in one fell swoop, it would be Samsung. Almost every year since the Galaxy S3, the Korean company has been announcing and shipping their flagship smartphone in span of weeks across many countries all at the same time. The Galaxy S5 is no exception.

Come April 11, the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be released and made available at retail stores in the Philippines for P34,990. In addition to being available unlocked, the Galaxy S5 will be offered by carriers Smart and Globe on their postpaid plans.

fr_1517

Smart is offering the Galaxy S5 at Plan 999 with P800 monthly payment for a total of P1,799 a month for 24 months. That comes with unlimited LTE data, 9 minutes, and 99 texts to all networks. You can also get it at Unlimited Data Plan 2000 for free on a 30-month contract, which includes 150 minutes and 200 texts to all networks.

The Galaxy S5 is also available on Globe for P1,699 a month at Plan 999 with P600 monthly payment and comes with 5GB of LTE data, 5 minutes, and 100 texts to all networks. It’s also offered for P1,799 a month at Plan 1299 with P500 month payment which comes with 25 minutes, 500 texts to all networks, and the same amount of LTE data.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 sports a couple of new features that you may like. Among those is the upgraded 16-megapixel camera which can now focus at a subject in just 0.3 seconds. It now also has an advanced HDR that makes photos under conditions with intense lighting more natural, such as when you’re taking a photo of the horizon with the sky. It now also does ‘bokeh’ shots with the Selective Focus feature.

fr_1515

Another interesting and useful (hopefully) thing on the Galaxy S5 is the Download Booster. What it does is it combines your Wi-Fi and LTE connection, if present, so you can get faster download speeds on your phone. Of course, this would depend on how fast your carrier’s LTE network and the active Wi-Fi network is.

The Galaxy S5 comes with a built-in heart rate sensor, located below the main camera. This would be helpful if you want to quickly check your heart rate (in bpm) say after a quick run. You can access it within the improved S Health application, which can now track your steps taken with a pedometer.

Samsung also made the Galaxy S5 more life-proof. It now carries an IP67-certification, which means it can resist water and dust under certain conditions. Yes, it also means the microUSB port is covered. And perhaps the most interesting feature of the Galaxy S5 is the Ultra Power Saving Mode. With that turned on, the phone can last up to 12.5 days. That’s quite a feat considering we’re talking about a smartphone. How can they do that? It turns off most of the unnecessary features and makes the display black-and-white only to conserve power. Also, as long as the Ultra Power Save Mode is active, you will be limited to some stock apps only such as phone, messaging, browser, calculator, etc.

Globe, Smart, and Sun provides Typhoon Yolanda victims with 25 SMS daily for 5 days

Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) Philippines

Photo: NOAA/AFP/Getty Images

In a response to the damage, catastrophe, and difficulties in communications brought about by Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda here in the Philippines), the three mobile network operators in the country — Globe, Smart, and Sun — have jointly agreed to provide customers and victims in typhoon-hit areas in Visayas with 25 SMS daily starting tomorrow until November 17. These SMS can be used to send local and international messages. This service will be available in Leyte, Samar, Cebu, Aklan, Antique, and Capiz.

Globe and TM customers can send BangonPinoy to 8888 to avail of the free service. Customers on Smart, Sun, and Talk ‘N Text will automatically receive the credits at the start of each day.

The massive howler crashed ashore in the Leyte and Samar provinces on Friday morning, which is feared to have left up to 10,000 people dead. The typhoon packed winds of up to 315 kilometers per hour with gusts of up to 385 km/h, making it one of the strongest to have ever formed in the planet.

Spinnr offers music streaming service in the Philippines for P29 a month

Spinnr Smart Music Streaming Philippines 2

Spinnr, a subscription-based music streaming service, has just opened its doors to customers in the Philippines. The new music streaming service is a rebrand of Smart Music and its carrier partners which consolidates three brand names into a single, more recognizable one.

What surprised me is how low the pricing is. The Spinnr Plus Premium 30-day subscription only costs P29, the Spinnr Plus 15-day P15, and the Spinnr Plus 7-day P7. A Spinnr Plus VIP subscription lets you listen to their music catalog for 30 days and purchase tracks at 50% less. These pricing are absolutely cheap when you compare it to other (international) services like Spotify.

Spinnr Smart Music Streaming Philippines

Just like any other music streaming offering, Spinnr allows you to listen to your music on mobile devices in addition to their desktop website, though their app is only available for Android as of now. Users who have other devices though can access the touch-friendly mobile website using any web browser.

However, the current catalog on Spinnr is only limited to those under MCA and Ivory-Sony Music. We certainly hope they would pursue to sign more deals with other record labels in order to grow their library.

Spinnr Smart Music Streaming Philippines App

Currently, Spinnr requires a Smart, Sun Cellular, or Talk N text phone number for registration. A 15-day free trial plus five music downloads is being offered for new registrants.

With very affordable subscriptions, Spinnr is bound to succeed. So long as they keep on adding new content to their library.

Smart to offer the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on November 15

Smart iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c Philippines Postpaid Plans

Smart announced earlier this morning that the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c is officially coming here in the Philippines on November 15. If you can remember, the two new smartphones from Apple were announced last September 10, thus making the upcoming launch the fastest ever to happen here. Historically, it takes around three months for Apple to bring the iPhone in the country from the date that it was announced, as are the cases with the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5s features the new A7 64-bit chip, an improved 8-megapixel iSight camera with True Tone flash, and a fingerprint scanner for Touch ID, which lets you securely unlock your phone using your finger. The iPhone 5c, meanwhile, sports a colorful plastic design, the A6 chip, and an 8-megapixel camera. Both iPhones are still carrying a 4-inch Retina display and supports LTE networks.

Those who are interested to get an iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c from Smart may now register their interest on their website.

Smart offers the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, other laptops and tablets starting at Plan 499

Samrt Bro Gadget Plus Plans

Getting a new tablet or laptop doesn’t have to be hard and expensive. With Smart’s new Gadget Plus Plans, they are making that true and available to everybody. So if you’re in for a new tablet or laptop with bundled internet connection for your on-the-go moments, check this one out.

Starting at just P499 a month, you can already get a 7-inch Acer Iconia B1 tablet running on Android Jelly Bean and a mobile Wi-Fi with 30 hours of internet.

For P200 more, you can either have an Alcatel T7HD, an HP Slate 7, a Starmobile Engage 7 HD, or a Huawei Media Pad Youth 7-inch Android tablet, plus a mobile Wi-Fi with 50 hours of internet for just P699 a month.

If you want a more capable device bring with you, check out the devices on Plan 999. Available in this plan is the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 with P2,000 upfront payment, the Samsung ATIV Book 2 for P1,500, the Acer Aspire V5 122P Touch for P2,500, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 for P2,000, or the iPad mini 16GB for P1,500. These also come with 50 hours of internet hours per month.

If you want to get a trio bundle, look for these devices on Plan 1299. One bundle includes the Samsung ATIV Book 2, a Samsung wireless printer, and a mobile Wi-Fi device. The other bundle is the Acer Aspire V5 122P Touch, an Acer Iconia B1, and a mobile Wi-Fi. The two bundles come with a P1,000 upfront payment each and also have 50 internet hours per month.

If you’re worried about exceeding your allotted internet hours, well, fret not. Once you consume a certain number of hours on your plan, it will automatically switch to unlimited data. You can check out the table below for more info.

Smart offers the iPad mini for P999 per month with P1,500 upfront payment

Smart iPad mini Plan 999 399 Philippines

Here’s a nice offer from Smart for those who want to get an iPad mini but are on tight budget. They are running a promo wherein you can get a 16GB iPad mini 3G/LTE model for just P999 per month and a one-time upfront payment of P1,500. The monthly fee consists of the Smart Bro Plan 399 with 50 hours of data connection and the P600 amortization fee. If you think you’ll go over the data allowance by accident, Smart’s ABS (anti-bill shock) feature is there to back it up. What it means is when you go over the P999 threshold on your bill (excluding the amortization), it will automatically switch to an unlimited plan. In that scenario, your bill would then be P1,599.

Do take note that the Smart Bro Plan 399 is only a 3G data plan. If you want to connect to their LTE network, you would have to subscribe to the LTE data plans which costs P50 a day, P299 a week, and P995 a month. For your average surfing needs, I believe 3G is enough. I personally easily hit 4 to 8 megabits on their 3G network. Not that bad, actually.

You can check out the list of Smart Stores where you can get an iPad mini here.

Smart extends unlimited LTE until October 31

Smart LTE Unlimited Extension August October 2013

The extension of Smart LTE unlimited data plans seems to be a never-ending saga. When Smart launched their LTE network on August of last year, they said the all-you-can-eat LTE plans will only last until October of 2012. Then there was an extension. And another, and another… Unlimited LTE on most of their plans is supposed to end today, August 31.

But then, as you may have guessed, they are giving customers on the iPhone, Unlimited Data, and Smart Bro LTE Plans another chance to use LTE to their heart’s content until October 31, 2013. Smart’s unlimited LTE plans costs P50 a day, P299 for 7 days, and P995 a month.

However, it looks like the extension only applies to customers on a monthly plan and excludes prepaid users. But don’t fret, we’ve reached out to the folks at Smart to confirm if this is the case.

Smart Prepaid LTE SIM card poses for the camera, launching tomorrow for P40 (update)

Smart Prepaid LTE SIM Card P40

UPDATED: 5:10 PM August 9, 2013

Have you been wanting to get a prepaid Smart LTE SIM card but always find them to be mostly non-existent at Smart Stores and don’t want to shell out a few hundred or even thousand of pesos for one? Well, your dilemma is about to end real soon.

Smart’s real prepaid LTE SIM card has just been pictured. The SIM card, which bears a P40 price tag, was reportedly purchased at a Smart Store in SM Iloilo. It comes with a dual-cut SIM card for use on devices with a micro and mini SIM. A standalone nano SIM will be available for P100.

The main difference between the Smart Prepaid LTE SIM and the Smart Broadband Prepaid LTE SIM is that the latter does not allow registrations for call and text promos, which is important if you call and text a lot. The regular Prepaid LTE SIM does not come with a free 7-day LTE subscription, as with all other SIM cards sold for P40.

For those living in the south, you can snag one by going to the said Smart Store and ask for the Smart Prepaid LTE SIM — the one for phones (a store employee will ask about this).

For everyone else, you can wait for a few days before it becomes available. You can try checking out your nearest Smart Store, but I cannot guarantee that you will find one. Smart will formally launch the Prepaid LTE SIM card on August 6, that’s tomorrow!

Thanks Amy!

Smart to announce LTE for prepaid tomorrow, here are the details

Smart LTE Prepaid

News that Smart will announce LTE for prepaid subscribers tomorrow are making rounds online. Fortunately, you don’t have to wait until tomorrow because we have independently confirmed the pricing details for the forthcoming subscriptions.

Apparently, Smart will offer LTE for prepaid in unlimited variants, just like its UnliSurf counterparts. There will be a total of three available variants with the same pricing for the postpaid LTE, 1-day for P50, 7-days for P299, and 30-days for P995. It is not immediately clear if Smart will be offering volume-based packages too or whether there will be a fair-use policy that will be imposed on the plans, although the latter is definitely probable.

Other important details such as the pricing for the LTE modems and other devices are currently not available, though it is expected to be announced tomorrow.

The prepaid LTE will be available for Smart Prepaid and Smart Bro Prepaid SIMs.

Google may be launching carrier billing for Play Store in the Philippines soon

Screenshot_2013-04-13-15-41-50-2

Android users and fans alike may soon have a reason to rejoice. We have just discovered that search-giant Google may soon launch the ever useful carrier billing as an additional payment method on the Google Play Store.

As you can see in the Google Play Store screenshot above, there is now an option that allows you to bill the purchase on your mobile phone bill or deduct it from your prepaid credits, although the option itself is not yet functional. This should be truly beneficial for those who do not have a credit card and want to legally own apps and games for their devices, especially when you consider how easy and more convenient it would be to buy contents in the future — you just go to a tindahan and reload your phone and that’s it. Compare that to other solutions like using prepaid cards issued by banks, which is very hassle.

Moving on, it is worth noting that the carrier billing option will be available to all networks in the Philippines, that is, Globe Telecom, Smart Communications, and Sun Cellular. Lastly, Google says you need to be using mobile data connection and not Wi-Fi to use carrier billing.

Here’s hoping that Google will flip the switch for this shortly.

Find out if a mobile number is from Smart, Sun, or Globe with Smart’s SIM ID service

Smart SIM Service

Do you know the feeling when you’re registered to a call or text promo and were accidentally calling or texting a number that doesn’t belong to the same network you’re on? Do you always ask your friends or family the “Ano ba yung 0918, Smart or Globe?” question? Well, the times of that are about to end as you can now check from what network a mobile number is registered with Smart’s SIM ID service, which just launched yesterday.

Checking a mobile number is ABC-easy. Simply text SIM 09181234567 to 5757. Just replace the number with any number that you like. It’s free and requires no balance. Now I hope you don’t buy a Smart SIM just to use this service. :-P

Smart Communications partners with Mozilla to launch Firefox OS smartphones

Mozilla Firefox OS Smart Communications

Smart Communications Inc., the country’s largest mobile carrier, announced a partnership with Mozilla to bring in affordable smartphones that run on their open-source Firefox OS.

This makes Smart the sole operator in the Philippines to bring Firefox OS smartphones. Firefox OS allows OEM and carrier customizations. That means Smart can add their own skins and apps on any smartphone to address the needs of their customers.

"Firefox OS brings the freedom and unbounded innovation of the open Web to mobile users everywhere," said Gary Kovacs, chief executive officer of Mozilla. Mozilla touts openness in the Firefox OS. Customers and users can do anything they want on their devices and assures they will be free from any restrictions.

"With the support of our vibrant community and dedicated partners, our goal is to level the playing field and usher in an explosion of content and services that will meet the diverse needs of the next two billion people online," he added.

Smart chief wireless advisor Orlando Vea said he is happy that Filipinos will be among the first to enjoy Firefox OS devices. "We're excited to see Firefox OS in the market because this will help bridge the digital divide. Its HTML5-based technology will make available affordable mobile devices with an open mobile ecosystem. This is aligned with our inclusive vision of putting mobile Internet in the hands of every customer," he said.

Mozilla also announced the other carriers that will carry Firefox OS smartphones. That include América Móvil, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison, Three Group, KDDI, KT, MegaFon, Qtel, SingTel, Sprint, Telecom Italia Group, Telefónica, Telenor, Telstra, TMN and VimpelCom.

Manufacturers that already committed to make Firefox OS smartphones are LG, Alcatel, and ZTE, with Huawei to follow later in the year. Firefox OS smartphones will have Qualcomm Snapdragon processors.

Who knows, the next Netphone might run on Firefox OS?

Apple enables LTE on iPhone 5 on Globe and SMART

iPhone 5 LTE Globe and Smart Philippines

Apple has officially enabled the LTE functionality on the iPhone 5 both on Globe and SMART. As we have reported last week, Apple is set to unlock the previously restricted feature of the iPhone 5 on 36 more carriers this week.

Now that it’s here, all it takes for you to see that ‘Enable LTE’ toggle (which replaces the 3G toggle) on your iPhone 5 is to update it to iOS 6.1.

Up until now, though, both Globe and SMART are yet to detail out the processes their subscribers should do to be able to get LTE service on their phones. But since it has been officially announced by Apple, they should be on that matter anytime now.

SMART introduces new Family Circle Plans

Smart Postpaid Family Circle Plans

SMART Communications recently announced the newest addition to their postpaid lineup, the Family Circle Plans.

The Family Circle Plans is SMART’s offering for families looking for a way to be always connected with each other. It has two tiers, the 3 circle (Plans 800 and 1200) and 4 circle (Plans 1800 and 2500). The 3 circle plans come with 3 lines with consecutive phone numbers, latter one comes with 4. Each line gets its own credit limit, consumable amount allotment, and billing statement.

For example, the Family Circle Plan 2500 comes with 4 mobile phone lines. The primary line gets a P700 allocation and the 3 remaining lines get P600 each. Allocations may vary with each plan. The Family Circle Plan 800 has a P300 allocation for the primary line and P250 each for the remaining lines.

Subscribers will also get one device for each line in the plans. All plans come with consecutive phone numbers so it will be easy to remember.

Check out SMART’s website for more details.
