Nokia finally announces the Lumia 1020, the first Windows Phone with a 41-megapixel camera

Nokia Lumia 1020

Building on the great innovation they came up with the 808 PureView, Finnish manufacturer Nokia has finally revealed the Lumia 1020, the first Windows Phone to pack a ginormous 41-megapixel camera.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 combines what Nokia had packed into their previous smartphones — a 41-megapixel backside-illuminated camera sensor with an optical image stabilization and a Xenon flash. The camera, which features the Zeiss optics (previously Carl Zeiss), sports six lenses and can take photos of up to 34 or 38-megapixels which depends on the aspect ratio.

A new app called the Nokia Pro Camera brings a fresh user-interface that is easy to use which allows anyone to capture professional-looking photos without having to deal with dreading dials and buttons. It offers settings which photo enthusiasts will appreciate such as ISO, white balance, exposure, and shutter speed. It even has manual focus capability!

There is also a new feature called the Dual Capture (no, this is not what you are thinking) which takes advantage of the high megapixel count and takes two photos at once — one 34- or 38-megapixel photo which you can freely use later for editing, cropping, and more, and an oversampled 5-megapixel one for easy sharing and uploading.

Nokia also announced a new imaging software development kit (SDK), which is now available, that provides key image editing features of the Nokia Lumia 1020 to developers. In fact, Nokia has announced that many top imaging apps like Vine, Path, Flipboard, Oggl Pro by Hipstamatic, Vyclone, Yelp, CNN, Snapcam, Panagraph, and Foursquare will be using the SDK to offer great features to the users. And yes, those are coming to Windows Phone.
